Dashboards & visualization

We design screens that answer specific questions: what happened, where, and what to look at now.

The challenge

Reports are assembled by hand, arrive late and end up in a drawer. A good-looking chart that answers no question drives no decision. And if a screen takes longer than ten seconds to read, the team goes back to the same old spreadsheet.

The solution

We start from the decisions you need to make and build the screen backwards: clear visual hierarchy, comparisons against the previous period, and navigation from summary to detail. We validate it with the people who will use it every day, not only with whoever commissioned it. Every screen is tested on desktop and on mobile before we sign it off.

It's for your company if…

  • Every manager walks into the meeting with their own spreadsheet, and the charts are rebuilt by hand every month.
  • You pay for a BI tool, but hardly anyone opens the dashboards that were built in it.
  • Knowing how the week is going means phoning each branch or waiting for the month-end close.
  • Management wants to check the numbers from their phone when travelling, and today the only option is having someone send a file.

What's included

  • A decision brief per screen

For every screen it is documented who looks at it, when and to decide what. That brief is the criterion for accepting or rejecting every chart that goes on it.

  • Desktop and mobile versions

It is not the same screen shrunk down: on mobile, quick-check indicators and alerts come first, with the detail one tap away.

  • From summary to the actual document

From total sales you drill down to the area, from the area to the client and from the client to the document, without leaving the dashboard or requesting a report from anyone.

  • Readable in real conditions

Contrast reviewed for office and shop-floor screens, text sizes checked, and no information carried by colour alone.

  • Training per user profile

Short sessions built on each area's cases: how to filter, how to drill down and how to read every indicator on the dashboard.

How we do it

  1. Screen brief

With each area we define the questions the screen must answer and rank them. That produces the list of dashboards to build.

  2. Draft with real data

We present a first draft loaded with your data and correct it with the users before building the final version.

  3. Build and usage test

We build the final dashboards and test them with real tasks: finding a specific figure, explaining a deviation, preparing a meeting.

  4. Review after launch

After the first weeks we review what gets used and what does not, and whatever sits unused is removed or rebuilt.

FAQ

We already have a BI tool. Will we have to change it?

Not necessarily. If the tool you have covers what is needed, we design and build on top of it. A change of tool is only proposed when there is a specific limitation, and the case is made in writing.

How often is the dashboard data refreshed?

As often as each decision requires: some need yesterday's close, others need the latest hour. It is set dashboard by dashboard, because refreshing more often than needed costs money and adds nothing.

How many dashboards do we need?

Usually fewer than expected. One dashboard per decision is preferable to a screen that shows everything and answers nothing. The initial brief sets the list, and it can grow whenever a new need appears.

Can dashboards be shared with someone outside, like an advisor or a partner?

Yes, with their own access limited to what they are meant to see. Who logs in and when is recorded, and the access can be revoked at any time.
